03/12: Q&A on Saddles

Michael DeTemple 12/3/10

Q: Every so often I have to get a saddle or two filed/smoothed due to a pinging sound and a jump in pitch that occurs when I tune. Would titanium saddles help minimize this "notching" my Raw Vintage saddles suffer from?
A: Some players have a more percussive attack with their picking hand that exerts a more downward impact. This can cause the strings to be driven into the saddles and over a period of time hammer the strings into notches that are formed by the impact. I have had my saddles on my Strat and Tele for many years now and I have not run into any problems. I have been sending the Titanium Saddles out for about 10 years now and I have had 2 or 3 calls pertaining to this. I have sent over 500 sets of saddles out now so it is not a widespread problem but it could occur.
There is a marked difference in the tonality and touch sensitivity when using Titanium that, in my opinion, far out weighs the merits of steel saddles. The Raw Vintage Saddles are a very good product that just offer a different palate for your taste.
